Arabica climbs back above US$3 a poundArabica

A stronger Brazilian real and El Niño fears pushed prices to their highest level since early September.

US$3/lb arabica, week of 5-9 Oct

Arabica futures rose back above US$3 per pound in the week of 5 to 9 October, their highest level since early September. The main trigger was Brazil's currency. The real reached a near five-month high against the US dollar, which means Brazilian farmers earn less for every dollar of coffee they sell. Many respond by holding stock back, which tightens supply.

Weather is the second worry. Flowering for Brazil's 2027 crop is starting with below-normal rain in Minas Gerais, and traders fear El Niño could make it worse. The US Climate Prediction Center has said the El Niño that formed in June could become one of the strongest in more than 75 years.

The rally did not last a straight line. Prices dropped sharply mid-week when traders sold long positions, a reminder of how nervous the market still is.

Why it matters for Bangladesh

Almost all coffee in Bangladesh is imported, so world prices feed straight into what roasters and cafés pay for beans.

US Climate Prediction Center
