EU deforestation rules: what coffee needs to knowEU deforestation
Large operators must comply from 31 December 2026, and instant coffee is now in scope.
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) bans coffee, cocoa, soy, beef, timber, palm oil and rubber from the EU market if they are linked to land deforested after December 2020. Companies must be able to show where their products were grown.
The law has been delayed twice. Under the amendment published in the EU's Official Journal on 23 December 2025, large operators must comply from 31 December 2026, and smaller operators by mid-2027, Mongabay reported in January.
A 2026 simplification package then eased due diligence for downstream operators and brought soluble (instant) coffee into scope, after it had originally been left out, FoodNavigator reported in May.
Farm-level traceability is becoming the global norm. Any future Bangladeshi coffee export would need records showing exactly where it was grown.
